Building dredge now. I have Kneen pontoons, 5 HP Briggs from D-Will with P-180 and all hoses needed. Also, have 3" kneen jet and a DIY 4" jet. Basically all I need is the frame, sluice and cone.

Just a random question as far as some of the connections go, why isn't PVC used in more operations? I understand why you would need a metal jet log, but as for the water pump connections or nozzle it seems like PVC would be a cheaper alternative.

Higher... the 2" threaded female/hose end is around 16.00+. Special part at plumbing supply.

PVC 90's actually reduce the water flow, so it's better to use the hoses to avoid the loss of water rate.

And... building a jet log out of PVC won't fit hoses. The OD and ID are way different. PVC when it get cold also gets bridle. That's why our classifiers crack and break up in the winter.

I got a better idea for you.. Why don't you go with a crash box, they only took them out of production to benefit the california gold miners to reduce the mercury from exploding into tiny droplets. Run a crash box and it just needs to be a 4 in jet log into a metal wall. Then ya need the sluice.. and frame..

I use both, built an aluminum flair that the jet log fits into and that goes into a crash box. works pretty good. when I was building my dredge I ask on one of the other forums and half said flair and half were for crash box so figured I would have the best of both worlds.

The faster you can get the water and material settled out, after jet, the better.

The crash box produces turbulent water so I feel a flair is better.

I can see where using PVC with a std Jet Log would be an issue for wear, but ive built a few jets from PVC that have 12 or more jets that make a cone and the material is not blasted into the side of the pipe. as for the hose, if there is only one hose attachment at the suction end, bell that end out and the hose is inserted INTO the pipe, not over the pipe. if you need to attach a hose at the exit side, heat the PVC and insert a section of steel to attach to. in a couple jet, you could also use PVC for just the pressure housing and use a steel pipe for the interior, this make for a lighter jet than going all steel.

im fixin to convert my highbanker to a 2.5 inch dredge. i think this will work well with the small creeks that i stay in. ill keep everyone posted on the out come. good luck to everybody with your projects.

You can make dredges with adjustable legs for small creeks. That HB conversion will work just fine.
