Well this was a fair digging weekend, I had to work Friday but Scott was off so he went up to our little test hole and widened it and lengthened it a good bit, what was 2'x3' is now 6'x4' and we are about 5' deep. On Friday when Scott worked the hole larger he stopped right at the rock scrape layer of top gravel. Saturday we went out and moved our tarps and dirt to the other side of the hole so now it is much easier to get the material to water... On Sunday we decided if we could find gravels concentrated then we would dig a bunch of buckets and run a test with the sluice. All in all we ran about 12 5gallon buckets and about the same for 1 gallon buckets... We had uncovered an unusual layer of rich orange and yellow sand and the gravels where right underneath. We did find some gold so that is great. A bunch of little fly poop and a very small flake. Pretty darn good for a random test in a random pit. The further we go dig the larger the cobble. Now some pics, sorry no pic of the gold. It wasn't much, a couple hundred fly poops... but we found some. And seems the deeper the gold got a little better. The is from the top of the hill looking down into the channel. From the bottom of the channel looking upstream so to speak. The newly widened hole. That's a full size pick. Working out the cobbles and gravels and larger stone. Close up on some of the larger cobble. Large bowling ball quartz starting to appear in the gravel pocket. Got those out and hit a false bedrock... So like I said we ran quite a bit for a good test. Looks like river gravels and cobble to me.

My back hurts just reading this report. Like you said, "We do it like the old 49's did it." Yep, still makes my back hurt. Lol. Good luck. Keep digging.

It's one thing to see the view when dredging under water, it's quite a bit different doing it top side.

If we find any good stuff, we are going to flood the hole and dredge it out. Going side to side all the way up the channel. A long summer project.

We are about 55 feet from the creek, not far at all, but outside the stream buffer zone.

put a blaster nozzel on the end of a 1.5in hose and pump and use that to dig the hole... if the nozel attaches to a pole, you can do it without even getting wet...
