news.yahoo.com/fugitive-treasure-hunter-nabbed-florida-2-hunt-144801276.htmlNot sure who all is guilty in this mess. He had a dream to find the SS Central America and found it off the coast of South Carolina. Raised the money, got the technology and team together and when he found it, the world laid claim to the ship. Lesson: If you find something spectacular, keep it to yourself.

Another article. www.cnn.com/2015/01/29/us/florida-treasure-hunter-nabbed/index.htmlI have been following this since before he raised the first dollar. It's amazing how the press seems to see thing differently and how the story changes so often depending on who is writing the article. Anyway, looks like jail time for him and his girlfriend. Hero to jail bird. Go figure.

Yep, the insurance company and many others came out of the wood work trying to get some of the action. The whole thing was tied up in court for a long time and the court divided up with a lot of people leaving the four original guys who made this all happen left with pennies on the dollar. If he was going to run, he should have headed out of country like you said. I would be sucking Coronas and squeezing hot chicks in Costa Rica or somewhere where they wouldn't extradite me. Of course, I would post some pictures of the gold and gold coins on this forum for you guys to enjoy. But big gold miners like you wouldn't be too impressed with my pitiful gold bars. Lol.

The thing is people invested in a treasure hunt. Like every other investment there are risk involved, some investments more than others. I would think it would be the investors responsibility to do their due diligence before investing to determine if there is potentially anyone out there who could lay a legal claim to anything found. I do understand that there was some money made, but I can just imagine the cost that were incurred in getting there.

My point exactly, Mark. How many treasure maps have been sold? Just last month someone got busted for the same kind of scam for a rich shipwreck that a Google search said was worthless. This crap happens almost everyday. A year or two ago someone dumped some worthless emeralds off the coast near Key West and scammed a bunch of idiots. Some money was made on the SS Central America deal but after everyone got their greedy cut, who knows what was left. I just don't understand how he could have ripped it off alone. Every step in the whole process from the beginning was under the watch of court appointed officials and an unbelievable number of cameras. These guys wanted the publicity and each coin or whatever was cataloged, photographed, etc. Something stinks.
