Do you test pan , look for a gavel bar or any other way? All of the above. For dredging, I look at the main water currents and look for spots where the current is forced to slow down or turn. This creates low pressure zones doe gold to fall out and settle to the bed. This is a good place to start looking.

I look for big big rocks. lol But seriously gravel bars can yield good gold from flooding. The theory is that larger or heavier stuff will fall in a hole faster than the light sands and over time work its way down to bedrock... This is not always the case... There are questions one must ask, where did this bar start, where does it end... Did it start down stream by hitting a wall so to speak or did it start at the top of the bar upstream and flood material worked its way over and filled in the hole till it leveled out again... It's about impossible to tell without proper test panning. Or sluicing different area's of the bar to see where the gold and larger rocks are concentrated. We chase the larger rocks/boulders that's where anything heavy fell or would fall. I always begin panning till I find multiple colors in one single pan, once I've done that I dig right there and expand in a radius around that spot. This has always yielded decent to great results for me. If you're not up to panning then pick a spot and dig and dig till you fill a bucket, run that one bucket in a sluice and do a cleanup. If gold keep digging like before, go down and expand. You will notice with proper testing which way to follow the streak or pocket to dig out. Just my 2 grains... LOL

Yes James. But some people can learn from it Yep, I asked how do you find it? I usually find a place in a gold bearing area were people don't usually look for gold. Ya can't find good gold where everyone is going.
