My son bought a small one (6' maybe) at a yard sale for 35.00. I need to get a paddle for it. Those paddles are expensive too!

You may want to consider a SOT or sit on top kayak. That one will hold water where the SOT is self bailing. It Is also easier to get back on a SOT if you fall off. Not saying that one will not work, just some things to consider.

I was thinking the same as Mark, a SOT would be my choice.
Graig's List, seems to be a few of all types in your area or close enough to make it worthwhile.

SOT "Sit On Top", differs from a normal kayak in that the only open area is the section you sit in and usually very shallow, all other sections/storage areas are either open with bungles and or sealed compartments and separated from the seating area. Here's a site that explains the different types of kayaks www.paddling.net/kayaks/

sit on tops are good for newbies but more expensive. sit insides can carry more gear and if water coming over the deck is a concern then you may want to check out a spray skirt. any of the boats pictured here will do just fine for flat water on up to class 2 whitewater [ most rivers around here are class 2]. recreational kayaks are pretty stable while whitewater boats are not. just some basic info for now. ill put more on here later.

yes you could do that. i have a kayak similar to the perception in your photo. many times i have straped a a52 sluice box, bucket, shovel, backpack full of stuff to the deck of the boat and i had a 30 lb prybar inside. kayaks handle more than people think.
